The bridge symbolizes transition and connection, and also neutral ground. Bridge is structure and pathway, a linking of opposing sides of a landscape often separated by a void. The latter may take many forms: the depths of a river, lake or waterfall; a chasm in the earth, the gap between two people, given differences in language, personality or goals; the mythologized breach between earth and heaven, conscious and unconscious, time and eternity. Psyche appears to support the separation of conscious from the unconscious, but also a bridging that brings them into creative relationship.
The Milky Way is a celestial bridge in the mythology of China and other cultures and the rainbow was often seen as a celestial bridge, linking earth to heaven. Only the gods can traverse the rainbow bridge; humans must pass under. And in shamanic traditions, it is the initiated shaman, as master of death and retriever of the soul, who alone can bridge into the spirit world and return to human embodiment.

The reason for my choosing of this particular photo is because I resonate with the symbolic meanings outlined above. Foremost though it is because I photographed the bridge during a visit “back home” earlier in January, while attending the funeral of my dear sister Monika. She had withstood the onslaught of a rare form of cancer for one year in an exemplary fashion, and at 46 went off to bigger and better adventures. Amongst many other significant aspects related to the time I spent at the Stadtwald during her and my youth, it is also the bridge I photographed my dad and I standing on in 2006 (he went off to bigger adventures in 2008). The bridge symbolizes a pathway for staying connected with them in the ethereal levels.
In this context I highly recommend Dr. Eben Alexander’s book, “Proof of Heaven”.
