May, the month of change, at least for my family and me, big time. My younger sister, who lives with her family in Germany, has been battling her second bout with cancer since January of this year, after having been free of the non discriminating illness for about 5 years. A few days ago however she was told that she has anywhere between 3 – 6 month of life remaining. A very, very sobering and crass statement. Only an act of providence or a miracle will extend her time.
A week or so ago my friend Jim came through town as he was on his way from Texas to Wisconsin. He told me that while driving through rural America he came across a sign at the entrance to a little town that read: “Welcome to where you are”. That simple yet very poignant sentence coupled with my sisters current situation seemed to be an appropriate quote for this month as it spells out a very deep and simple truth. The stark reality of life and the now. While searching in my archives for an appropriate image to reflect the above, the close up shot of Walt Disney’s Orchestra Hall in Los Angeles designed by Mr. Frank Gehry seemed fitting to me.

May is a month of autumn in the Southern Hemisphere and spring in the Northern Hemisphere. Therefore May in the Southern Hemisphere is the seasonal equivalent of November in the Northern Hemisphere and vice versa.
No other month begins or ends on the same day of the week as May in any year. January of the following year always begins and ends on the same day of the week as May of the current year.
The month May was named for the Greek goddess Maia, who was identified with the Roman era goddess of fertility, Bona Dea, whose festival was held in May. Conversely, the Roman poet Ovid provides a second etymology, in which he says that the month of May is named for the maiores, Latin for “elders,” and that the following month (June) is named for the iuniores, or “young people”.
