Loosing your car key at Devils Lake clearly calls for “surrendering and relaxing into the mystery…”.
While returning from a commercial architectural photography assignment of photographing the DoubleTree by Hilton hotels in Madison, WI and Minneapolis, MN this past week, I stopped at the Devils Lake State Park in Wisconsin to hike along the bluffs surrounding the lake. Very atypical for me, I lost my car key in a bizarre way while progressing on that hike. I searched and searched for hours in the leaves and sand, the key was gone, swallowed by the earth gods. Willfully surrendering to the mystery that this adventure was to bring, I decided to relax and began my weekend.
Ha, easier said then done. My wallet was in the car, cell phone was dying and all I had eaten was an early breakfast. As I contemplated and investigated my options, a local locksmith quoted me $300 with a 50:50 guarantee to create a functioning key…VW in Madison, WI quoted about the same, plus the towing fee to have the car physically there and work to be completed the next day. After a brief internal debate I resorted to calling my dear lady friend and asking for her help. In her usual selfless way she offered to drive the three hours to arrive at 11:15pm with my spare key. And this on a Friday night, after a long work week – God bless your heart Luz. After sharing her lunch sandwich at midnight, we checked into the “Spinning Wheel Motel” in Baraboo, WI and enjoyed a wonderfully serendipitous Saturday in the town that is the home to the Circus World Museum, the former headquarters and winter home of the Ringling Brothers circus and now the largest library of circus information in the United States.
The photograph for this months background wallpaper calendar shows the interior of the Al. Ringling Theater in Baraboo, Wisconsin which opened its doors in November, 1915 and has been operating continuously ever since. Architecturally it is one of the palace style theaters from a long gone era and I will be sharing a separate post in the near future.

July is the seventh month of the year in the Julian and Gregorian Calendars and one of seven months with the length of 31 days. It is, on average, the warmest month in most of the Northern hemisphere (where it is the second month of summer) and the coldest month in much of the Southern hemisphere (where it is the second month of winter). The second half of the year commences in July. In the Southern hemisphere, July is the seasonal equivalent of January in the Northern hemisphere.
July starts on the same day of the week as April in a common year, and January in leap years. In a common year no other month ends on the same day as July, while in a leap year July ends on the same day of the week as January.
The birthstone for July is a ruby.
Previously, it was called Quintilis in Latin, since it was the fifth month in the ancient Roman calendar, which traditionally set March as the beginning of the year before it was changed to January at the time of the decemvirs about 450 BC. The name was then changed by Augustus to honor Julius Caesar, who was born in July. In the ancient Roman calendar the ides of July fell on the 15th day of the month.
